Closer, 2010

Closer is a multi-layered interactive portrait that examines the viewer’s relationship to the subject by creating an experience that powerfully links the two. Transparent images of the subject captured at slightly different moments in time are layered with lighting behind each. The proximity of the viewer determines the dimming and brightening of the light sources, transforming the comprehensive image dynamically over time. Though they are stills, these portraits become moving images that reflect the complexity of character found in the subject. As the viewer and subject become closer, that complexity is revealed and the viewer is challenged to understand what may be found in layers of character, both in portraits and in life. Closer was exhibited as part of the Interaction 10 Conference Art Exhibition.
